Studying Communication should equip us to exercise personal agency and to participate as political citizens, but the field operates from within a system that has already accepted the dominance of economic over political possibilities, narrowing human freedom to the realm of career advancement. Panelists will contextualize this double-bind, treating Communication as exemplary among disciplines, and will juxtapose the current double-bind to a progressive model of education as a civic good, protected from commodification.
