Storytelling is one of the ways in which all humans communicate, make sense of, problematize, remember, create, and envision freedom. Unlike other forms of communication that can be restricted to experts, narrative logics are available to all people (Fisher, 1987), thereby positioning storytelling as communication free and accessible to all people with the ability to facilitate connection, sense-making, health, and well-being. Communicated Narrative Sense-Making theory (CNSM, Koenig Kellas, 2022, 2018) examines the links between storytelling and well-being by investigating the content, process, outcomes, and translational possibilities of storytelling in interpersonal, family, and health contexts. Each of the theory's seven propositions are situated within one of three heuristics: Retrospective, Interactional, and Translational Storytelling. As a relatively new theory, one that spans three heuristics, has seven propositions, and affords the opportunity to use multiple methods (e.g., interviews, observed interactions, art, experiments, applied interventions, surveys), the freedoms (e.g., breadth and flexibility) of the theory may also limit researchers' confidence when trying to employ CNSM. Additionally, the possibility of using CNSM theory to examine storytelling across racially and ethnically diverse populations has yet to be realized (c.f. Denson, 2022; Palmer-Wackerly et al., 2022), limiting our ability to more fully understand and address how storytelling can promote understanding, perspective-taking, compassion, and well-being among people with diverse social identities. This preconference, therefore, has two primary goals: (1) to offer guidance on using CNSM theory and testing its seven propositions across the three heuristics, and (2) to showcase and brainstorm applications of CNSM theory that amplify the voices of more diverse and marginalized populations.
