This pre-conference is centered on mentorship for Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous peoples who are working towards decolonizations and Indigenous freedoms while navigating settler colonial institutions of higher education. The pre-conference is designed to promote inclusion and interventions in the discipline by offering a range of mentorship paradigms focused on participant needs, which we will collect before the pre-conference from registrants. We welcome participants working in diverse areas of the communication discipline in both higher education and industry at any stage of their career, including scholars, teachers, administrators, students, practitioners, and activists. This pre-conference will provide support for a variety of needs including but not limited to research and teaching Indigenous Communication, engaging as a non-Indigenous comrade (Dhillon, 2020), navigating graduate school, working on the tenure-track or the career-line track, publication, grant-writing, administrative work, community engagement, Indigenous research methods (Kovach, 2010; Smith, 1999; Wilson, 2008), consulting, and more.
This half-day pre-conference includes the following; 1) a welcome to the Lands by a representative from a local Indigenous organization or nation; 2) a keynote panel by a members of the Indigenous Caucus Leadership Circle about mentorship, relations of support, and navigating academic spaces; 3) a mentorship activity that connects participants with mentors for a targeted session; and 4) a closing ceremony offered by a member of the Indigenous Caucus Leadership Circle.
