Spotlight Panel. Honoring Paul Farmer in Health Communication: Centering People, Liberation, Advocacy, Community, and Environment (PLACE) through Critical Health Communication Praxis

Sponsor: Health Communication Division
Fri, 11/18: 12:30 PM - 1:45 PM CST
Room: Grand Ballroom C - 5th Floor
This session will be live streamed and recorded for viewing after the convention until December 31, 2022.

Medical Anthropologist and physician Dr. Paul Farmer was undoubtedly a public health giant on the world stage. His life work and commitment to global health equity inspired scholars and practitioners across the world and in different disciplines, including health communication. On Feb 21st, 2022, Dr. Farmer unexpectedly passed away in Rwanda from an acute cardiac event.

In keeping with the theme of the NCA 108th annual convention, "Honoring PLACE", and our long-established history of interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary collaborations, this panel will put a spotlight on Paul Farmer's work and ways or degree to which health communication scholarship has drawn on and extended his ideas and commitment to social change and global health equity through critical health communication praxis. More specifically, the panelists will reflect on the developments in critical health communication theorizing and practices with respect to its focus on the role of colonial history and its aftermath, existing and emerging forms of marginality, neoliberalism, agency, and community. Panelists will also discuss the points of convergence and divergence in critical health communication and with Paul Farmer's work and identify the research directions that are needed in post-COVID and post-pandemic times to carry on his message for social and structural change.

This panel will follow a three-step process, similar to previous critical health communication panels at NCA. Through a dialogic process, the panelists will first share their written remarks with other panelists (before the conference); this will be followed by open discussions among the panelists, leading to further questions and discussion with the audience.
