Dialogue and Deliberation at the Crossroads: Navigating Pathways to Address Uncontainable Problems across Invisible Borders

Sponsor: NCA-Forum
Thu, 11/19: 9:30 AM  - 10:45 AM
Virtual Event
Room: Zoom Room 16
Our session envisions communication scholars as engaged community members and reflective practitioners. Featured participants are scholars of difference, dialogue, and deliberation. At the same time, we are members of communities struggling to make sense of and respond to crises. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, it quickly became apparent that communities need spaces for dialogue and deliberation more than ever in moments of acute crisis such as this one, but also that communication scholars and practitioners face distinct challenges in meeting that need. While we all hope that the current public health crisis has passed by November, we are also recognizing that the interconnected nature of the current global system facilitates the spread of all sorts of social and physical diseases that cannot be contained by invisible political borders--and we need to be better equipped to respond swiftly and creatively with our knowledge, skills, and networks. Instead of presenting discrete papers or privileging the voices of our featured participants to the exclusion of others, this NCA-Forum will model the kind of dialogue and deliberation that we engage in our work. Featured participants working in areas of deliberative democracy, public discourse, diversity and innovation, and risk communication will set an example of dialogic engagement as they speak from their particular areas of expertise in conversation with forum attendees to consider how the communication discipline is distinctly positioned to lead collaborative action in the face of crises of global proportions, such as viral pandemics, terrorism, and climate change.
