In the past 20 years, the spoken word poetry scene has erupted throughout the United States and the rest of the world. National and world slam championship competitions have been established, and there has been an advent of corporation-‐‑sponsored and mass mediated poetry exhibitions, including BET's Lyric Café, HBO's Def Poetry Jam, and TV One's Lexus Verses and Flow. This has signified a broad acknowledgement of not only the power of the spoken word but also the public significance of protest rhetoric, deliberative discourse, civic and social justice commentary, or what we prefer to characterize as Lyrical Justice.
Lyrical Justice is a spoken word poetry slam showcase, which features six of the most accomplished spoken word poets in the world. Many of them have won national and international poetry slam championships, and have been featured throughout the media. Beyond their fame their message is extremely important, especially given our national climate of social frustration and human despair around the promise of equality and justice. These poets so eloquently speak with such emotive force and social urgency that their poetry jumps off the page and compels social change. Join us for Lyrical Justice as we speak to the need for public discourses to give voice to personal healing, civic justice, and community uplift.
