Abstract

Young learners with severe disabilities – with cognitive and communication impairments who may also have physical, sensory and behavioral needs – require instructional delivery that maximizes their learning opportunities and minimizes the barriers to attain desired learning outcomes. This workshop will demonstrate how to structure the environment and instruction applying UDL framework and DEC recommended practices to enhance the cognitive, communication and motor capacities and learning outcomes of children with severe disabilities.

Learner Outcomes

- Understand the complex and diverse learning needs of young learners with significant disabilities and how to tap into their strengths and needs to provide intensive and systematic instruction incorporating DEC recommended practices
- Describe specific strategies to use with children with diverse and complex needs applying UDL framework to provide child-specific personalized supports including mainstream and assistive technology to maximize learning outcomes
- Identify steps to deliver systematic instruction and the associated strategies.
- Identify strategies to work collaboratively with therapists, paraeducators, support staff and coordinate with families to enable young learners with severe disabilities to function independently and productively.
